I recently came across the ” Twisted Tales” Series by Jen Calonita – they are retellings of fairy tales with a plot deviation from the traditional stories. Mirror Mirror is a retelling of Snow white and the Seven Dwarves, with a “What if the evil Queen poisoned the Prince” twist.

Synopsis->

Following her beloved mother’s death, the kingdom falls into the hands of Snow White’s stepmother, commonly referred to as “the Evil Queen” by those she rules. Snow keeps her head down at the castle, hoping to make the best of her situation.
But when new information about her parents resurfaces and a plot to kill her goes haywire, everything changes for Snow. With the help of a group of wary dwarfs, a kind prince she thought she’d never see again, and a mysterious stranger from her past, Snow embarks on a quest to stop the Evil Queen and take back her kingdom. But can she stop an enemy who knows her every move and will stop at nothing to retain her power… including going after the ones Snow loves?

I am a big fan of fairy tales & absolutely love retellings . This tale by Jen is simply brilliant & is wonderfully written,capable of engaging all age groups. The Princess is the star of the story. She has to defeat the evil Queen ! She has to save the Prince! She has to rescue her father! She has to save her kingdom !

I enjoyed the narrative very much . The Princess has been portrayed as a strong woman with unwavering morals and immense compassion. It is repeated several times in the book that “she didn’t need a man on her side to fight”. The fairy tale ended on a beautiful note by emphasizing on mother-daughter relation & not the typical ” She lived happily ever after with her Prince”.

This is a whole series with retellings of Beauty & the Beast and Rapunzel too. I can’t wait to read all of them . This reminds me of one of my favorite series “Once upon a time” which is also a retelling of fairy tales, tying all the characters from different stories together. It was an absolute delight to watch that too.
