“Were you so profligate with your daylight that you must hunt about for things to do in the dark ? ” – Amor Towles, A Gentleman in Moscow
.
This historical fiction set in Russia 🇷🇺was a very interesting read for one of my book clubs 📚. Though the book picked up pace only towards the last few sections, the story line was quite good. It touches upon friendships of all sorts – Childhood , Political , Professional and also explores the depth of a Father – Daughter relationship. The book emphasizes on the ability to master ones’s circumstance, rather than being mastered by it .
.
The writing is greatly descriptive and I found myself enjoying the Author’s narrative style. Some lines I resonated with ⬇️
.
“One can visit the past quite pleasantly, as long as one does so expecting nearly every aspect of it to have changed “
.
“For what matters in life is not whether we receive a round of applause; what matters is whether we have the courage to venture forth despite the un-certainity of acclaim”
.
“Isn’t that why the pages of a book are numbered ? To facilitate the finding of ones place after a reasonable interruption”
.
The book has an impressive way of adding value to the mundane, that made me stop and ponder every now and then.
It wasn’t an easy read , but the book eventually grew on me !!
