Contrary to popular opinion , The Handmaid’s Tale is a ⭐️⭐️/5 for me. This dark dystopian novel left me very disturbed and scared. . The book follows Offred (she is of Fred) , a Handmaid in a totalitarian society – Republic of Gilead. She lives in a world where women are no longer allowed to read and are passed from one house to another to bear babies. The story goes back and forth between her current oppressive world and her past free world where she had a husband and daughter. The book shows a world where things could go horribly wrong for women and reading it opened my eyes to a lot of things we take for granted. But I just could not enjoy this extreme dystopia. . I did finish the book though , because the writing is fabulous. Some descriptions are a delight to the imaginary mind while reading. “Money has trickled through this room for years and years, as if through an underground cavern, crusting and hardening like stalactites into these forms “ She also describes betrayal as equivalent to being in an elevator cut loose at the top – falling and falling , not knowing when you will hit. . Margaret Atwood’s new book The Testaments, which is a follow up to the handmaid’s tale is out now. And I am staying far far away from this one. The Handmaid’s Tale is a show on Hulu too .
