The Year of Yes is not-exactly-a-memoir by Shonda Rhimes . I am a huge fan of anything in Shondaland , and my Thursday evenings are always blocked for Grey’s Anatomy with my Girls . So of course I grabbed this book & enjoyed every bit of it . It talks about a year in Shonda’s life when she decided to say YES to all the challenges and opportunities that came her way . I listened to the audio book for this , and that made the experience so much better.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
.
While the book focusses on the events of Shonda’s “Year of YES” , she shares her insights on several topics & that is what I loved.  It is a refreshing read & brings to light several stigmas we hold for working Women . A lot of issues faced by working Women are not spoken about because it portrays them as weaker . Shonda calls out that Women who do it all, are definitely failing to give 100% in some arena – they don’t really have it all . But that does not at all mean they have failed there – they need to reach out and ask for help & there is no shame in asking for help .
.
“I don’t think it ever occurred to me before, how much and how often Women are praised for displaying traits that basically render them invisible” – Shonda
.
Another eye-opening point from this book is Women’s tendency to shy away from compliment. If someone appreciates you, how many of you actually accept it and say thank you & accept it rather than trying to push it under the rug or give someone else credit ?
If you are appreciated or complimented , learn to shut up and just say Thank You !!
.
Year of Yes has also given me a glimpse into the world of a TV show writer I admire. Her struggles and strength have made her more real . She unapologetically calls herself a professional liar – because she is a fictional story teller . This is a great read that emphasizes on the importance of owning your powerful self .
