.
Such A Fun Age by Kiley Reid is a book exploring what is “not racist “ behavior. A book that is very much relevant to today’s events.This is an excellent read & the writing is so mature, it is difficult to believe it is a debut!

SYNOPSIS->
Emira Tucker, Alix‘s black babysitter, is hassled by a cop in the supermarket for seeming suspicious of kidnapping 2 year old Briar. Alix is shocked to learn of the racial discrimination & decides to do all she can to make Emira feel wanted and welcome. Emira’s confrontation is filmed & when this leaks on the Internet, Emira & Alix discover disturbing truths about themselves & each other.
.
REVIEW->
The book starts off rather simple but grows on you as the narration progresses. The book analyzes some deep rooted stereotypes about racism & privilege. Alix,in an attempt to seem supportive,tries to build a relation with Emira. But some of her efforts are extreme & even creepy. Alix is portrayed as the picture of rich & white privilege.
.
Emira on the other hand is an unsuspecting girl merely trying to pull through. The gap in class,living standards & resources is glares at you in the face.
.
Not including/accepting POC(People of Colour) is considered racism but talking only to POC is considered a fetish. So how do you know what correct racial behaviour is?
.
Correct Racial behavior is difficult to define & the story will make you think about where you stand in that regard. This book has no good or evil characters. Everyone is doing what they believe is correct & so I didn’t dislike any character. The ending was also super genuine and realistic.
.
The Author has paid attention to so many small details in the writing. Instances like pushing hair out of your eyes, that are mundane enough to ignore but add richness to prose. This detailing is what stood out for me
.
An educating & thoughtful story that will make you question your understanding of racism! A read of the hour
