⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

My review for this book is a #ownvoices review. The Henna Artist is Alka Joshi’s debut novel and a @reesebookclubpick. The promising premise of the story had me very excited to read this book, and while I enjoyed the characters, their potrayal seemed a little overly crafted and fictitious.

SYNOPSIS->

Escaping from an abusive marriage, seventeen-year-old Lakshmi makes her way alone to the vibrant 1950s pink city of Jaipur. There she becomes the most highly requested henna artist—and confidante—to the wealthy women of the upper class. But trusted with the secrets of the wealthy, she can never reveal her own…
Known for her original designs and sage advice, Lakshmi must tread carefully to avoid the jealous gossips who could ruin her reputation and her livelihood. As she pursues her dream of an independent life, she is startled one day when she is confronted by her husband, who has tracked her down these many years later with a high-spirited young girl in tow—a sister Lakshmi never knew she had. Suddenly the caution that she has carefully cultivated as protection is threatened. Still she perseveres, applying her talents and lifting up those that surround her as she does

REVIEW->

The Plot ->

Set in post-independence Jaipur, India- the country and its citizens are still learning to balance the delicate lines between their traditions and those of the Brits. Lakshmi’s life as a henna artist is a lovely imagery and Alka’s writing aided in visualizing the enchanting beauty of Lakshmi’s designs. However, Lakshmi being a single woman couldn’t have had it easy during those times. A single lady living and moving so freely without being shrouded by gossip seems very implausible to me. The plot centers around how Lakshmi realizes her true calling and learns to free and forgive herself.

The Characters->

The story is told from Lakshimi’s POV for the most part and I think that is the reason the story lacks emotional depth. Lakshmi is a brave woman, having left her husband and forged her own path. Her experiences and emotions could have had more weight to them. Instead,she comes across as apathetic and so we do not get to witness the magical character growth of her sister Radha or her friend Malik. The book has given enough space and importance to all the characters to leave them memorable though.

The Writing ->

Alka’s writing style is what had me engaged the most. Her words weave splendid images of brightly colored mansions, elegant ladies and intricate henna designs in the Reader’s mind. You cannot not think the word “beautiful” of the world Alka creates. The storyline has been crafted as delicately as the henna designs Alka describes and there’s a graceful charm to it.

Audiobook Narration->

I did listen to the audiobook for this and the Narrator has done a pretty decent job here. The delivery is crisp and effective. I do think a little more emotion could be infused for the dramatic scenes.

As for the book cover, it is elegant with a unique allure to it. The colors and the lone lady walking through, paint a picture, perfect for the story

About The Author

From Goodreads –

There comes a point in every daughter’s life when she begins seeing her mother as a person separate from her family, someone who has an identity outside of motherhood. That was the moment I began re-imagining my mother’s life, and that re-imagining became THE HENNA ARTIST. I was born in Rajasthan, India, and moved with my family to the U.S. when I was nine. Even after graduating from Stanford University, and working in advertising and marketing, I never considered becoming an author. But taking my mother to India in her later years changed all that. In 2011, I got my MFA in Creative Writing from the California College of Arts in San Francisco, California. It took 10 years, a lot of research, and many trips to India to complete my debut novel, and I’m thrilled to share my writing and publishing process on YouTube: http://bit.ly/alkajoshi
