A thriller that begins with answers instead of questions is ambitious writing & proves the Author’s confidence in her story’s ability to keep the reader engaged and satisfied. I have read and loved little secrets by Jennifer Hillier, but this book is my favorite work of hers.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5
SYNOPSIS (from Goodreads) ->
When she was sixteen years old, Angela Wong―one of the most popular girls in school―disappeared without a trace. Nobody ever suspected that her best friend, Georgina Shaw, now an executive and rising star at her Seattle pharmaceutical company, was involved in any way. Certainly not Kaiser Brody, who was close with both girls back in high school.
But fourteen years later, Angela Wong’s remains are discovered in the woods near Geo’s childhood home. And Kaiser―now a detective with Seattle PD―finally learns the truth: Angela was a victim of Calvin James. The same Calvin James who murdered at least three other women.
To the authorities, Calvin is a serial killer. But to Geo, he’s her first love.
For fourteen years, Geo knew what happened to Angela and told no one. For fourteen years, she carried the secret of Angela’s death until Geo was arrested and sent to prison.
While everyone thinks they finally know the truth, there are dark secrets buried deep. And what happened that fateful night is more complex and more chilling than anyone really knows. Now the obsessive past catches up with the deadly present when new bodies begin to turn up, killed in the exact same manner as Angela Wong.
REVIEW->
The Plot ->
Picture this -> the story opens… quick character intro… the crime is brought up and the culprits are identified.. they are tried and sentenced to jail… all this in the first few chapters. Then what is left in the book you ask? A chilling story of what happens when the culprits get out of jail, several years later! A very unique plot narrated in a chilling manner, to keep the reader glued to the pages till the end!
The Characters->
With a small set of characters to follow, the book focuses on how the characters grow over the several years this book spans for. Georgina and Kaiser are the main players and their relationship evolves from friends to foes, and friends again, also changing the dynamics of their feelings. Calvin – the antagonist has a significant character arc too.
The Writing ->
I liked how the chapters are divided broadly as a Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. The brilliance of the relevance of these chapter names will be revealed to the invested reader. The Author’s confident writing shows off the promise in the plot and the book is a treat.
AudiobookNarration ->
I listened to the audiobook for this one and it was splendid. The narrator had done a great job of delivering the emotions and theatrics while staying crisp. Her narration had definitely enhanced my experience with this book.
A book to read if you are brave enough for it. Do consider the trigger warnings in this book rather seriously.
