SYNOPSIS->
At 28, Stephanie Land’s plans of breaking free from the roots of her hometown in the Pacific Northwest to chase her dreams were cut short when a summer fling turned into an unexpected pregnancy. She turned to housekeeping to make ends meet. Her writing as a journalist gives voice to the “servant” worker, and those pursuing the American Dream from below the poverty line. Maid is Stephanie’s story, but it’s not her alone.

In Maid, Stephanie reveals the dark truth of what it takes to survive and thrive in today’s inequitable society. This book, in Stephanie‘s writing documents untold stories of the poor-scrubbing toilets, navigating domestic labor jobs, assisted housing and the web of government assistance.

I am always looking for books that teach me a new perspectives and this book falls into that bucket. This was a difficult read because the raw ugly truth is written without any filters. Stephanie had a tough life working as a maid. She had to endure the pain of leaving her child at daycare, surviving on food coupons and government assisted housing and programs.

In her story, she talks about how everyone was looking for a way to say she deserved what she got. But come to think of it, everyone is actually trying to do their best with the opportunities they are given. Being privileged, does not always give us the right to look down upon others. She talks about different encounters at the houses she cleaned and how she tried to set her self up and provide her daughter a decent life. I never thought I would get a peek into a Maid’s life and so this book was definitely a learning experience for me. Everyone deserves respect and kindness- regardless of their class and living standards.

A good book that I highly recommend, for those seeking to walk in the shoes of someone who was dealt a shitty hand, but managed to live through and break out of it.
